Hugely respected for his innovative approach to the fretless bass and his groundbreaking work with Japan/Rain Tree Crow, Kate Bush, David Torn and others. Mick Karn died on the 4th of January, 2011.

Initiated by Peter Murphy, Karn’s final work during his lifetime sawthe unexpected resurrection of the duo’s cult mid-1980s project, Dali’s Car.

Conceived during the final months of Karn’s life, the resulting 5 track EP recalls the exotic Eastern-tinged Art Pop sensibility of Dali’s Car’s fondly remembered 1984 album, The Waking Hour, while also possessing an elegiac quality which fittingly evokes the sad circumstances under which the material was written and recorded.

Featuring significant contributions from friends and regular musical collaborators Steve Jansen, Jakko M Jacsyzk and Theo Travis, InGladAloneness begins with the life-affirming King Cloud and Sound Cloud. Driven by Karn’s dense and compelling bass and bassoon patterns and Murphy’s singular voice, the songs contain lyrics that emotionally echo Murphy’s response to Karn’s condition and suggest musical directions the project might have pursued had it continued as a creative concern. Along with the inventively multi-layered re-imagining of Artemis (from The Waking Hour), these pieces operate as the rhythmically propelled spiritual storm before the glacial calm of the two closing numbers.

The Arvo Part meets Turkish chant lament of Subhanallah and – prefaced by a mournful Karn instrumental – the deeply personal reading of Jaques Brel’s classic If You Go Away (a favourite song of Karn’s), provide a moving conclusion to a poignant final statement.

Both Karn and Dali’s Car distinctively combined the sophisticated and the primitive to produce a challenging music with an instinctive and heartfelt emotional core. InGladAloneness is a glorious testament to a unique vision tragically cut short by illness.

The other half  is a weekly (or bi-weekly depending upon our mood) radio show presented by Mrs13 & dj13.  It’s a combination of old and new music with no rules as to what we’ll play.  Most of the time we don’t even know what’s coming up next.  We just wing it and have fun with it.  Recent shows have featured themes for songs such as blood and bleeding, “hey dude, give me my voice back” (which featured bands that sound like other bands), cover songs and a lot of drunkenness & talk on our behalf.

XIBALBA III

The Underworld, a place of fear, segmented into nine planes and ruled by 21 Lords. Artaud Seth, Jawa Seth and Jon take us on a descent into this unreal world. After the debut album “Lib.1″ and its follow up “Hypogeum II” released earlier this year, the third long player of the MERCIFUL NUNS is now available: “Xibalba III”. Completely unphased by trends and inclination for ingratiation to the listener Artaud Seth in his role as mastermind behind the MERCIFUL NUNS continues to traverse his chosen musical path. Traditional Gothic Rock produced brilliantly not only in the context of present demands but quite simply seminal for timeless great music. Goth as a mixture of widescreen epic and massive walls of guitar sound, sacred choir chants, rattling drum computer and Artaud’s sepulchral voice permeating through every fibre of one’s body, at times plunging its intrinsic despair deep into the heart of the listener. And yet, even this does not adequately describe the musical workings of the NUNS. The primary objective is to ensure the survival of the Goth-Rock spirit of the 80′s and early 90′s into the modern era; to not only recollect the sound but also from a lyrical perspective, to recall the origins of Gothic culture. Hence we find in “Xibalba III” mythological themes in the foreground. Where do we come from? How long have we been occupying this Earth? Is there such a thing as Gods from outer space? Such questions and more await the listener. MERCIFUL NUNS are much more than just the sole legitimate successor of the three musicians’ legendary former band GARDEN OF DELIGHT! The NUNS have already attained cult status and must be regarded as seminal for intelligent listening pleasure!
